Dear Sangha, It is my delight to announce that Catherine Anraku Hondorp was affirmed as a Dharma Holder at the Grail on Saturday, July 29th, around 11 in the morning. A Dharma Holder is an assistant teacher, empowered to offer teachings in the form of interview (daisan), and hold workshops and lead groups. During the ceremony, Anraku received a new rakusu and gave a talk. In our tradition, we hold the role of teaching to a high standard. Congratulations to Anraku for her years of practice, her generous heart, and for fulfilling the requirements and joining the teaching path at Village Zendo. In Gassho, * * * Here is what Genpo Roshi wrote about Dharma Holder, also called, Hoshi. "The term Hoshi, which means Dharma Holder, was created in 1979 by Maezumi Roshi. The term comes from reversing Shiho (Dharma Transmission, permission to freely teach). It was used to acknowledge the completion of koan study and it meant that the recipient could hold daisan. Daisan was to be given by an assistant teacher training under Maezumi Roshi. Later, Hoshi was given not necessarily for the completion of koan study, but for acknowledging that the recipient was ready to hold daisan and continue their training with him." |
